The 24-pin is really a 20+4: the extra four pins were added in 2003 and many cables still split off so they fit older boards.
Tips & tricks
PCIe 8-pin and CPU EPS 8-pin look alike but are keyed differently; if it does not slide in easily, it is the wrong one. Never force it.
